In 2018 Fit to Work were commissioned by the National Library of Scotland to write and record a piece of music about a 1962 mathematics exam paper. When we figure out how and why that happened, we’ll let you know.

Lyrics:
I MISS MATHS (ok so a plus b by a – c by c – a)
I MISS MATHS (equals a plus b by 2 a c minus a squared minus c squared)
I MISS MATHS (equals two a squared c minus a cubes minus… )
I MISS MATHS (minus minus minus arrrrrrgh)
NOW I CAN’T DO IT
Once I solved equations to get some peace (Factorise, differentiate)
Definite solutions brought release (Find the volume, prove the theorem)
Could pass a test when reality was rough (Get the values, find the function)
Eventually the numbers weren’t enough
I MISS MATHS (x plus 3 y by 2x plus y equals 12)
I MISS MATHS (so 2 x squared plus 7 x y + 3 y squared equals 12)
I MISS MATHS (so if x equals 1 then 7 y plus 3 y squared equals 10)
I MISS MATHS (then then then arrrrrrgh)
NOW I CAN’T DO IT
Found other ways to deal with the downs (Factorise, differentiate)
Straightened my head out, queered myself around (Find the volume, prove the theorem)
Abandoned the numbers that looked after me (Get the values, find the function)
Now when I need them I’m all too free
Maths -- please come back
Maths -- please come back
Maths -- please come back
Maths -- please come back
PLEASE
PLEASE
COME
BACK
Oh, I’ll do all the equations
Oh, I’ll solve all the problems
Oh, I will practice…
[this section left intentionally blank]
...occasionally
Take care of the numbers that took care of me
I MISS MATHS (2 to the 3 x minus 5 equals 1 2 8)
I MISS MATHS (and 1 2 8 equals 2 to the 7)
I MISS MATHS (so 3 x minus 5 equals 7)
I MISS MATHS (SO X EQUALS 4)
NOW I’M GONNA DO IT
